About
Rupe is a display-centric Gurmukhi Unicode typeface family designed by Paul Alan Grosse. At its core, Rupe builds on the informal GHW Dukandar Unicode design but pushes it toward a cleaner, speed-efficient text appearance, making it both legible and expressive across a wide range of Punjabi typographic needs.
Visually, Rupe is structured yet warm. Its character shapes breathe with relatively open counters and clear forms rooted in authentic Gurmukhi letter proportions. The bordered version on Behance highlights how outlines and fills interact, offering display flexibility from ultra-thin weights to robust black styles, including outline and bordered variations, which are especially useful for dynamic headlines or cultural titles where nuance and weight play a role.
Because Rupe includes numerous weights and style variants (10 normal weights, multiple outlines, and bordered versions), it works exceptionally well in large sizes and layered text settings ideal for book covers, posters, film titles, and signage that need both Punjabi script clarity and graphic impact. Its thoughtful Unicode support also ensures broad functionality across digital and print platforms where Punjabi texts are typeset.
